22nd November, 2011 - Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific’s new beachfront property, Wyndham Resort Torquay, has been officially launched with the help of Eight-Time World Surfing Champion, Layne Beachley.
Layne, Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific’s Ambassador, was joined by tourism and government officials and local business people for the launch of the newly named resort, formerly Crowne Plaza, along with Surf Coast Shire Mayor, Dean Webster. The event was hosted by Barry Robinson, CEO and Managing Director of Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific and included local and interstate guests.
Located on the Esplanade in Torquay, Victoria, the mixed use property, in a partnership between Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific and Wyndham Hotel Group, features extensive function facilities, the Latitude -38 Restaurant and a selection of hotel rooms and apartments.
Work is currently underway on the accommodation to renovate and reconfigure 57 of the rooms into 42 hotel rooms and apartments which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Mr Robinson said, “I am honoured to be here in Torquay today to officially open our first mixed use property in Victoria. This is an ideal location for Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific to expand to and we look forward to welcoming our WorldMark South Pacific Club owners and hotel guests to the property.”
As home to one of Australia’s most famous surf beaches, being part of the official opening was a perfect fit for Layne who is no stranger to the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in Torquay, which she has competed in on 14 occasions and won three times.
“Torquay is such a special place and not only for its iconic surfing spot at Bells Beach but for its beautiful natural surrounds and ideal location,” Layne said.
“I’m extremely proud to be Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific’s Ambassador and part of the company’s move into Torquay. The resort is fantastic and I’m sure it’s going to be a popular holiday choice for people from all walks of life,” Layne added.
